The ultimate goal is to reach a mountain, which is the source of evil sweeping the world. As the player explores, he will encounter different points of interest and roadblocks, and the player will enter the battle scene. Combat in the game is turn-based, and heroes have to be positioned correctly, as some of their abilities won't work if they're in the wrong position. As players explore the world, they can also visit Shrines of Reflection, where players can learn more about the backstories of the game's characters.

As characters progress through the game, their stress levels increase. Under great stress, they will collapse in combat, which will cause a significant drop in health and gain negative traits. Additionally, high-stress levels can affect relationships between game characters. If a character is friendly with another, they'll get an extra in-game bonus. However, if there is an adversarial relationship between the characters, one may prevent the other from using their skills and increase the other's stress levels. Players can go to the hospital to remove bad character traits. When a team member dies, another member will join the player's team upon arrival at the hotel. This is also where players can reduce their character's stress level and increase their team's dynamics. However, staying in an inn also increases aversion, a stat that indicates the evil of the world-devouring all things. The flames on the stagecoach represent the hope of the team. When the flames are about to die, the player's team will be penalized. When a match ends, the profile level increases, which unlocks new characters and items for the player to use in subsequent matches.
