According to Graphika, the surge in popularity is linked to the publication of multiple open-source diffusion models or artificial intelligence programs that can produce images that are significantly better than those produced a few years ago. The models that the app developers use are free to use because they are open source.

Graphika analyst Santiago Lakatos stated, "You can create something that looks realistic," pointing out that prior deepfakes were sometimes hazy.
