Chart Attack! Japanese Top 20 (2/2 - 2/8)

Alex Fraioli

This is the week that Japanese chocolate companies make over half of their annual sales. The Japanese may have adopted Valentine's Day, but they put a little twist on it: only the girls give chocolate. Wacky, I know! Gifts of chocolate to men on the 14th are called giri-choko, and are frequently nothing more than platonic obligations. But dateless American guys aren't so lucky, unless they've imported a copy of Love * Ping Pong and can ease their sorrows with eye candy instead. The latest stats from Dengeki Online are also good to have too!

Dragon Ball Z 2 (the second in what we know as the DBZ Budokai series) is actually just now hitting Japan after its initial success in Europe and North America in November and December, respectively. The cel-shaded fighter plays off the success of the DBZ anime to sell a whole lot of copies to the fans. Pokémon Fire Red and Leaf Green are firmly nestled in the 2nd and 3rd slots, still getting warmed up for the next few weeks.

Released on February 4th ("Puyo Day"), Sega's Puyo Puyo Fever is providing puzzle action for PS2 owners, but Dreamcast (yes, that Dreamcast), GameCube, and Xbox versions are to be released in the coming months. Will the sales be as favorable? Probably not! Just below it in the #5 slot is another Yu-Gi-Oh! title from Konami on the GBA.

If you're looking for over 130 different aircraft to bang around the skies, you're probably looking for Konami's Airforce Delta: Blue Wing Knights, which sits crestfallen at #16. The weekly enigma comes in the form of the anime-inspired Golden Gash Bell!! Unare! leaping back onto the list from #65. Perhaps those who preordered a Famicom GBA SP are looking to round out their software library in preparation for its approaching launch?
